Âncoras do Ilhéu

Also known as: Âncoras

The top of the shoal lies at 14 m and the surrounding sand at 22 m. Its anchors, some around 300 years old and the largest more than 2 m long, recall the time when Vila Franca do Campo was the first capital of São Miguel. Being next to the islet reserve, the site also has good marine life: several moray species and nudibranchs live on the rock, and crustaceans hide in small caves at its base. Large common stingrays and small red mullet search the sand around it.
