Betsey Island Wreck Graveyard

Also known as: Betsey Island Wrecks · Betsey Is Wreck Graveyard

Since 1916 unwanted ships have been sunk off Little Betsey Island, creating a concentration of wreck dives close to Hobart. Two flattened 1930s freighters lie off the reef, and a line of 1980s harbour vessels runs west from the island, including the dredge hopper William Cowper and the suction dredge Macquarie. Sections of the old Hobart pontoon bridge lie nearby and, like several hulls, are covered in yellow and white jewel anemones. Most wrecks are around 20 metres, the Musgrave in 34 metres. Visibility is often poor after swell, and enclosed sections are only for experienced divers with torches and a line.
