Bathurst Channel
Also known as: Sarah Island - Bathurst Channel
Brackish, tea-coloured water flowing out of the channel blocks the light, so below about six metres the dive feels like a night dive. In this darkness animals that normally live in deep ocean water thrive in the shallows: bands of hydroids, anemones and bryozoans give way to large sea pens at 14 to 18 metres, and at about 20 metres a reef carries gorgonian fans, basket stars and sea whips. There are hardly any fish, so the appeal is entirely the invertebrates. Divers need low-visibility experience, very good buoyancy and should go with a licensed operator.
