Buck Island Reef

Also known as: Buck Island

Buck Island lies less than two miles northeast of Christiansted and is the centre of Buck Island Reef National Monument, first protected in 1948. About two thirds of the island is ringed by an elkhorn coral barrier reef, and Destination Magazines notes that St. Croix has the only well-developed barrier reefs of the Virgin Islands. Divers moor in a calm, shallow lagoon and explore elkhorn beds that rank among the most impressive in the Caribbean despite the damage of Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Reef fish, critters and nudibranchs live among the coral, and spotted eagle rays and hawksbill turtles are seen. An underwater trail with plaques on the seabed makes the reef a favourite with snorkellers too.
