Cane Bay Wall
Also known as: Cane Bay Drop Off · The Wall
Cane Bay Wall lies off Cane Bay Beach on the North Shore Road and can be dived from the beach as well as from a boat. Shore divers enter beside the boat ramp and swim out past a mooring buoy at about 26 feet, crossing coral gardens and sand chutes before the drop-off. Sources disagree on where the wall begins and how far it falls, but they agree on a near-vertical face dropping into the deep water off the north coast. Old ship anchors encrusted with coral lie along the route, and The Nature Conservancy grows elkhorn and staghorn coral in a restoration nursery in the bay. Reef sharks, sea turtles, stingrays, barracuda and schools of triggerfish and blue tangs are regular sightings, and dolphins, eagle rays and, in early spring, humpback whales are occasional visitors.
