Anse Chastanet Reef
Also known as: Anse Chastanet
Divers walk in from the volcanic sand beach and reach a plateau of sponges, soft corals, brain and boulder corals within a few metres. From there the reef drops steeply, and most guided dives work the middle section where schooling fish, moray eels, crabs and lobsters gather. Deeper down, plate corals stack up in delicate layers, and a cavern at the base of the cliff is known for resident frogfish. More than 150 fish species have been recorded on the reef, which makes it a favourite of macro photographers. The local dive centre uses it as the required check dive before boat dives in the marine reserve and runs night dives here, when octopus, squid, basket stars and the elusive segmented worm locals call "the Thing" come out.
