Shark & Yolanda Reef

Also known as: Shark and Jolanda Reefs · Shark Reef & Jolanda Reef

Shark Reef and Yolanda Reef are two pinnacles at the southern tip of the Sinai, where the Gulf of Aqaba and the Gulf of Suez meet. Shark Reef is a vertical wall covered in soft corals and anthias, joined by a sandy saddle to the coral garden of Yolanda Reef and on to a small third pinnacle called Satellite Reef. The Cypriot freighter Yolanda ran aground here in 1980 and slid into deep water in a 1987 storm, leaving toilets, bathtubs and other cargo strewn over the reef. In summer, schools of snappers, barracuda, batfish, jacks and unicornfish gather off the wall, and grey reef or blacktip sharks may follow. The currents can be very strong and the dive is a drift in whichever direction they run.
