Barren Arch
Seafriends explains that during big north-easterly storms the curved cliff focuses waves into the arch, moving huge boulders and stripping life from its walls. Between storms sponges, bryozoans, hydroids and corals return, and the arch gives shelter to schooling blue and pink maomao, demoiselles, koheru and mado. The endemic nudibranch Jason mirabilis is found on the walls. The shallow entrance has a reef lip at 2 to 3 m, while the outer entrance is made of large kelp-covered boulders. Technical divers start deep dives from the anchorage nearby.
