Middle Reef

Also known as: Middle Reef (Point Lobos)

Middle Reef runs out through the centre and mouth of Whalers Cove, separated from the cove wall by a sand channel that is often visible from above as a gap in the kelp. Its eastern side forms a well defined ridge along the channel, while to the west lies a wide area of kelp and boulders. Divers usually surface swim up the channel and drop down to weave between boulder piles, mini walls and small overhangs filled with sponges, anemones and nudibranchs. Rockfish and greenlings hide among the rocks, and a good light reveals the colours under the kelp canopy.
