Del Monte Beach
Also known as: Monterey State Beach
Del Monte Beach is protected by the harbour and the municipal wharf, so it is calm on most days and the sandy entry has no rocks. Much of the bottom is sand with eelgrass, where halibut, rays, skates, sheep crabs, sand dollars and octopus at night can be found. A small sunken sailboat in about 25 ft has become a mini kelp forest with perch, rockfish and strawberry anemones, and the chassis of an old amphibious half-track lies nearby. Diving the pilings of the wharf requires permission from the harbourmaster. A shale bed with kelp lies a few hundred yards out at about 40 ft.
