Sec Grand Ilet
Also known as: Sec du Grand Ilet
Sec Grand Ilet sits off the eastern side of Grand Ilet at the southern edge of the archipelago and takes the full swell of the trade winds. Below the breaking surface the water is calm and usually very clear, and the shoal is covered in sponges, gorgonians and corals. Pisquettes recommends starting at the southern foot and slowly spiralling up to the summit while clouds of chromis, creole fish and sergeant majors surround divers. Barracuda arrive in growing numbers, some over a metre long, alongside deep-water sea fans, triggerfish and a hollow rock ridge at about 20 m that shelters lobsters, slipper lobsters, a Nassau grouper and a green moray. Ultramarina also mentions black coral, and Pisquettes reports Caribbean reef sharks seen in open water north of the shoal.
