Southwest Pinnacle

Also known as: South West Pinnacle · Southwest Pinnacles · South West Pinnacles

Southwest Pinnacle is a group of granite peaks in open water southwest of Koh Tao and is often called the sister site of Chumphon Pinnacle. Its special feature is the layout: one dive centre counts seven pinnacles arranged in a rough circle like a sunken mountain range, with a further 'secret' pinnacle a few minutes' swim to the southeast for divers on nitrox in good conditions. The tops are covered in sea anemones with pink anemonefish, while the deeper gullies hold gorgonian sea fans, whip corals, black coral and large barrel sponges. Large groupers are a hallmark of the site, together with schools of snapper, yellowtail barracuda and fusiliers hunted by trevally, and whale sharks pass in season. Because of its exposed position, current and visibility can change, so Advanced Open Water is usually recommended, although the shallow tops let less experienced divers join in calm conditions.
