Aow Leuk

Also known as: Ao Leuk · Ao Luek

Aow Leuk is a large, sheltered bay in the southeast of Koh Tao with views towards Shark Island and Koh Phangan. Its specialty is calm, shallow reef diving with lots of juvenile life: granite boulders along the shore carry hard and soft corals, and a sandy bottom between the reef sides is used for training. Blue-spotted ribbontail rays, juvenile boxfish and sweetlips, peacock soles, scorpionfish, giant clams and garden eels live here, schools of yellowtail barracuda and fusiliers gather in mid-water, and juvenile blacktip reef sharks patrol the shallows. Out across the sand to the east lies Suan Olan, an artificial site at about 14 to 16 m started in 2010 with a reef pyramid, a small car (a Mini Cooper) and concrete tubes. Currents are light, which makes the bay a reliable choice for beginners, courses and macro photography.
