Aow Mao

Also known as: Mao Bay

Aow Mao, or Mao Bay, is a sheltered bay on Koh Tao's southeast coast, and the HTMS Hanhak Sattru wreck lies at its mouth. Its specialty is a calm, varied reef slope: granite boulders, patches of sand and coral gardens descend gently from a few metres to about 20 m, and the larger rocks form small overhangs and swim-throughs. An artificial reef has been added to attract marine life. Butterflyfish, angelfish, parrotfish, snapper, batfish, triggerfish and trevally are common, moray eels, lionfish and groupers shelter under ledges, blue-spotted stingrays lie on the sand, and green and hawksbill turtles visit. With little current through most of the year, it suits all levels, from training dives and refreshers to underwater photography.
