Bradford Shoals
Also known as: Bradford Shoal · Bradford's Shoal
Bradford Shoals rises from very deep water, according to DAN from around 2,000 m, and is the bay's seamount closest to the open Bismarck Sea. Its top is covered mostly in flat plate corals and leather corals, and below a lip at roughly 27 m the walls fall away almost vertically. The real draw is the water above the reef, where large schools of barracuda, bigeye trevally, dogtooth tuna, unicornfish and fusiliers gather. Grey reef sharks patrol the walls, and visiting writers mention batfish, jacks and occasionally a hammerhead or the area's resident bull shark. Like the other seamounts near the open Bismarck Sea, it can only be dived when conditions allow.
