I-1 Submarine

Also known as: I-1 Japanese Submarine · I-1 Submarine Wreck

I-1 was nearly 100 m long and was driven aground after a battle with two New Zealand ships. A salvage blast in later decades destroyed much of the bow, so the hull is now torn open and divers can swim through the remaining structure. Coral and fish fill the inside of the wreck, and large sea fans grow along the neighbouring reef wall. The return swim along the reef passes big coral stands and many anemonefish in shallow water.
