B-17 Bessie the Jap Basher

Also known as: B-17 Flying Fortress Wreck · B17 American Bomber Wreck

The bomber, serial 41-2420 and nicknamed 'Bessie the Jap Basher', came down after a raid on Japanese shipping. US Navy Seabees removed the tail section in 1944, but the wings, forward fuselage and top gun turret are still in place. The cockpit has largely gone, yet control columns and levers remain visible. The fuselage shelters schools of small and juvenile fish, and the Vilu War Museum lies close to the site.
