Earl of Shaftesbury
Also known as: Earl of Shaftsbury · Earl of Shaftesbury Wreck · Wrecks of Ship Earl of Shaftsbury
The Earl of Shaftesbury was an iron four-master of about 85 m, built by Ramage & Ferguson in Leith; Dive for You, Dive Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka Tourism date her loss to 1893, when she capsized off Akurala on a voyage from Bombay. Salvagers and the sea have broken her up, yet parts of the hull, several masts and cabin walls are still recognisable on the sandy bottom. Thanks to the modest depth, about an hour underwater is enough to see nearly all of the wreck and the sand around it. Large stingrays, groupers, snappers, lionfish and porcupinefish live on the wreck, and Poseidon also mentions silver batfish and schools of barracuda. When the water is clear it is popular for wide-angle photography.

Vote for the name divers really use. Divers who logged a dive here count double. The votes are counted every night, and the main name only changes when another name has led clearly for a week.
