Sand Key
Also known as: Sand Key Reef
The spurs at Sand Key are ridges of coral in about 5 to 20 feet of water with sandy grooves between them, while the south side slopes to a gentle ledge around 65 feet. Fire coral is common, and remains of the original brick lighthouse, lost in an 1846 storm, lie in the shallows. The sand island itself changes shape with the weather. Parrotfish, trumpetfish, hogfish, barracuda, grouper and turtles are reported, and visibility varies greatly with wind and tide. Dozens of mooring buoys are provided because anchoring is restricted.
