Hannah M. Bell

Also known as: Mike's Wreck

The steel steamship Hannah M. Bell was carrying coal from Newport News to Veracruz when bad weather drove it onto Elbow Reef in April 1911, and salvage attempts were abandoned a few days later. Archaeologists mapped the site with the volunteer group Diving With A Purpose between 2012 and 2015. The collapsed bow with its long cutwater is the clearest feature, while the stern was heavily salvaged. The wreck lies on the outer reef where visibility is usually excellent, and it is popular with underwater photographers.
