Elbow Reef
Also known as: The Elbow
Elbow Reef is sometimes called a shipwreck reef because so many ships ran aground there, and several are dived as separate sites: the City of Washington, the Hannah M. Bell (Mike's Wreck), the Tonawanda, a wooden wreck from the Civil War era, and the Train Wheel Wreck. Between them, coral fingers and ledges covered in elkhorn coral shelter schools of snapper, porkfish, goatfish, and angelfish. Hawksbill and loggerhead turtles are often seen at mid-depths. In the south, the bottom slopes down to Nelson's Ledge, where it drops more steeply toward the sand. A sanctuary preservation area protects the reef.
