Rempart Canon
Also known as: Canon · Cannon
Rempart Canon is a shallow reef and sandbank north of Flic en Flac, named after an old cannon lying on top of the reef. It suits beginners, training dives and macro photography.
The site faces the cliff of the Medine sugar estate, near a river that runs mainly in the rainy season. A cannon on the small rampart is said to come from the Banda, a Dutch East India Company ship carrying Ming porcelain that sank in a cyclone in 1615, and blue painted porcelain shards can still be found among the rocks. The reef runs along a sandbank between about 11 and 20 m, which makes it good for buoyancy practice and Open Water training. Reef fish, garden eels, rays, lobsters and small crustaceans make it a favourite for macro photography.
