Million Dollar Point
Also known as: One Million Dollar Point · Million Dollar Beach
When the war ended, the US forces could not sell their surplus equipment to the British and French administration of the New Hebrides and drove it off a pier into the sea instead. The result is a slope littered with bulldozers, trucks, forklifts, cranes, boats and even crates of 1940s Coca-Cola bottles, starting right at the beach. Divers walk in from the shore, cross a shallow sandy patch and follow the wreckage down the slope. Small vessels lie among the machinery, including the coastal trader Dedele, whose bow rises to about 13 m. Green sea turtles, octopus, rays, scorpionfish and clownfish in anemones are common, and the shallows are easy enough for snorkellers and introductory divers.
