F4F Wildcat

The Wildcat lies upside down with its landing gear lowered, which suggests it crashed while taking off from or landing at the nearby fighter strip. It rests on sand against the reef in Palekula Bay, still fully intact. A US Marine observation squadron set up on Espiritu Santo in 1942 flew Wildcats modified for long-range photography. Little is known about this particular aircraft, and Aore Adventures says it is the only operator diving it.
