El Desierto
El Desierto starts on a shallow rocky reef full of holes, cracks and small arches where moray eels, shrimps and crabs hide. Further out, a seemingly endless sand plain stretches away, home to a huge colony of garden eels as well as rays, lizardfish and, in winter, angel sharks. A drop-off running roughly parallel to the coast descends from around 30 m to beyond 40 m and attracts large groupers, island groupers and passing pelagics such as amberjacks and devil rays. The return climbs through canyons to the reef where the boat is moored. Sheltered from the trade winds, it often has some of the best conditions in the reserve.
