El Bajón
El Bajón is a steep underwater mountain off the southern tip of El Hierro, set apart from the coast so that currents sweep around it and feed abundant fish life. Its two peaks lie at about 6 and 9 m, and around them the dive centres describe terraces and a feature known as the crater. The walls plunge to depths of roughly 100 m in places, so divers have to watch their depth. Large dusky groupers, moray eels and schools of amberjacks, barracuda and Bermuda chubs are regular, and devil rays and even whale sharks have been reported. Strong currents can make the dive impossible on some days, and the reserve limits how many divers may visit.
