C-53 Wreck

Also known as: C-53 Felipe Xicoténcatl · Felipe Xicotencatl · Shipwreck C-53 · C53 Wreck

The ship was built in Tampa as the minesweeper Scuffle, sold to Mexico in 1962 and converted into a gunboat. Before the sinking it was stripped of hazards, and it was placed on a sand bank so that it would not damage natural reef. Its three decks have large cut-outs, so guided penetration is possible with a light. A big green moray and schools of glassy sweepers live inside, while groupers and barracuda gather outside. Sponges and corals now cover much of the hull.
