Imbetiba Wreck

Also known as: Imbetiba

The Imbetiba was a cargo and passenger steamer that ran aground in thick fog in September 1881; the people aboard were brought ashore. In 1875 she had carried Emperor Dom Pedro II to the opening of a railway near Macaé. The wreck lies only about 50 m from the sand at the corner of Praia Grande and is completely broken up. Fine sand often buries it, so it is best visited when it has been uncovered. Because it is so shallow, snorkelling is enough to see it.
