Desroches Drop

Also known as: Desroches Drop-Off

Desroches Drop is the famous drop-off where the shallow plateau around Desroches ends and the outer reef falls steeply into the deep Indian Ocean. The Island Conservation Society places the sheerest part of this wall on the south-east slope and notes that depths exceed 1000 m within 2 to 3 km of the atoll. Gorgonian sea fans grow on the cliffs where light reaches, and a series of long, wide caves bores into the wall. Snappers and batfish hover at the cave entrances, while stingrays, turtles and nurse sharks may be met inside. Dive Explorer Seychelles calls it a spectacular drop-off on its Amirantes liveaboard route.
