Hunga Reef

Also known as: Hunga

Hunga is a ring of interconnected bommies of hard and soft coral sitting on a sandy bottom out in the open sea. Schools of yellow snappers, fusiliers and emperors can be so dense that they hide the reef, while trevally hunt among them and groupers, morays, parrotfish and unicornfish stay close to the coral. Crocodilefish and nudibranchs are found in the sand, and leaf fish hide in a school of glassfish towards the southern tip. Eagle rays and, rarely, sharks or mantas have been reported. It is dived at slack tide to stay on the reef rather than drift away from it.
