The Pinnacles

The Pinnacles lie off the western beach next to the Woodpile on the north-eastern side of Hook Island. Massive coral bommies rise from around 20 m almost to the surface, and the shallows are covered nearly solidly with staghorn coral. Acropora corals and huge porites boulders and towers make the hard coral the main attraction, which is why guides compare it with outer reef sites. The usual route starts off the western beach and heads east at 7 to 15 m, as the coral thins out further east. Between May and September manta rays and big Maori wrasse turn up regularly, and blacktip and whitetip reef sharks are frequent visitors.
