Mackerel Bay
Also known as: Mackerel Bay South
Mackerel Bay is one of the sites used when northerly winds make other parts of Hook Island unusable. Good coral covers the shallows, and scattered bommies at about 7 m create a maze of small canyons, ledges and swim-throughs. Medium-sized reef fish are common, and Airlie Beach Dive Centre adds stingrays and garden eels on a gently sloping reef. The fairly shallow profile makes it a suitable site for beginners. Visibility depends strongly on the tide, and the bay should be avoided in southerly winds.
