HMCS Saskatchewan

Also known as: DDE 262

The former Royal Canadian Navy destroyer escort was sunk by the Artificial Reef Society of British Columbia on 14 June 1997, close to Snake Island outside Nanaimo. The hull rests upright, with most of the ship between about 24 and 30 m and the seabed near 40 m. Both the forward and the aft gun are still in place and are now draped in plumose anemones. A long alleyway along the ship, known locally as Burma Road, and several open swim-throughs let divers explore it safely. Cloud sponges, feather stars, swimming scallops, wolf eels and octopus have made the wreck their home. The HMCS Cape Breton lies only about a hundred metres away, so both wrecks are often dived on the same day.
