Car Cemetery
The Car Cemetery began in 1988, when around 200 cars and trucks were sunk to create artificial reefs off the east coast. Cyclone Gonu in 2007 reduced the field to about 50 vehicles, many of them now partly buried, leaving tyres, fenders and chassis on the sand. Ropes link the wrecks, so divers can follow a guided route through the metal, which is overgrown with algae, barnacles and red, blue and orange corals. Nudibranchs are the main draw, together with seahorses on sea fans and car parts, blennies in the tyres, honeycomb morays and resting stingrays.
