Marsala Wreck
Also known as: Relitto Marsala · Piroscafo S. S. Marsala
Built by Alexander Stephen and Sons on the Clyde for the Sloman line, the Marsala combined sail and steam and later carried emigrants between Hamburg and New York. Sold to a Genoa company in 1911, she served as an auxiliary in the Italian-Turkish war before returning to Mediterranean trade. On her last voyage she was carrying 3,500 tonnes of phosphate from Sfax to Orbetello when the Campidano rammed her in thick fog. She sank in less than ten minutes, but all 23 crew and four passengers were rescued. Today the wreck lies at about 105 m and is reserved for very experienced divers; only her iron and bronze structures still stand, while yellow gorgonians and black coral cover the hull and anthias, lobsters and big scorpionfish live around it.
