Pigeon Island
Also known as: Pigeon Island Inside
Pigeon Island and its reefs form the Pigeon Island Marine National Park, a sanctuary since 1963 and a national park since 2003, about 1 km off Nilaveli. The park holds some of the best remaining coral reefs in Sri Lanka, and the shallow dives around the island are relaxed and suitable for all abilities. Divers see hard and soft corals, moray eels, puffer and porcupine fish, nudibranchs, shrimp and lobsters, and turtles are frequent. Blacktip reef sharks patrol the shallow coral, where they are mostly seen by snorkellers. The boat ride from Nilaveli takes about 10 minutes.
