The Thumbs
The Thumbs sits about 200 metres off Thumbs Point and is surrounded by a steeply sloping wall. The shallows are kelp-covered, but from around 25 metres sponges, sea whips and small gorgonians take over. On the seaward side the slope drops past 50 metres, patrolled by large schools of butterfly perch and bastard trumpeter. Inshore, in the gap between the island and the cliffs, a small patch of sea whips grows. Because the island blocks the prevailing swell, it can be dived in conditions that close most of the coast.
