SS Nord
Also known as: Nord
The Nord struck the uncharted Needle Rock between Cape Hauy and the Hippolytes in November 1915 and sank hours later in Munro Bight near Cape Pillar. Unlike most Tasmanian wrecks she still has the shape of a ship: the stern stands on a reef with the deck around 35 metres, the bow rests on sand in about 42 metres, and the propeller and rudder are clearly visible. The hull is thickly grown with sponges and sea whips and attracts large clouds of butterfly perch. Currents can run down to the wreck, so divers descend on the line, and planned decompression is usual. The site can only be reached in calm conditions, as the last stretch past Cape Hauy is exposed to southerly winds.
