The Steps

The reef descends in a series of steps from the kelp to broken boulders on the sand, which gave the site its name. Rocks covered in sea whips and finger sponges line the way, and halfway down a wall coated in zoanthids and sponges runs into a small cave system at around 20 metres. A chimney leads down towards the sand. Long-snouted boarfish, sea stars and large rock lobster are seen, and the ascent through the kelp makes a pleasant safety stop.
