El Capitan

Also known as: USS Majaba · El Capitan (USS Majaba)

The ship was built in 1919 in Portland, Oregon, as SS Meriden, sailed as El Capitan and served the US Navy as USS Majaba during the war, when a torpedo hit damaged her. She sank while anchored in Ilanin Bay after the war and now rests on her port side on the edge of a sloping reef, with her starboard side only a few metres below the surface. The forward and aft holds are wide open, so even newly certified divers can swim inside, and trained divers can enter the boiler room. Calm water without current and the intact hull make it a standard site for wreck training. Snappers, parrotfish, lionfish and nudibranchs live on the hull.
