Salt River Canyon East Wall
Also known as: Barracuda Bank
Salt River Canyon cuts a deep V into the north-shore wall just outside Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve, and its East Wall is a boat dive from a mooring in about 40 feet. Between about 40 and 80 feet the wall slopes down through large hard-coral formations with sponges and soft corals before dropping into the blue. The site is known for big schools of black durgon, yellowtail snapper, blackbar soldierfish and striped grunts, and the many barracuda gave it the name Barracuda Bank. Green and pink black coral grow here, and blacktip reef sharks, spotted eagle rays, turtles and dolphins are seen off the wall. The canyon also has history: Columbus is said to have come ashore at Salt River on his second voyage, and a NOAA Hydrolab underwater habitat operated here.
