James Barrie

The James Barrie ran aground in the Pentland Firth in March 1969, floated off two days later and went down off Widewall Bay while being towed towards Scapa. The trawler rests on her starboard side and is largely intact, with handrails, masts, the starboard anchor, fishing blocks and the winch still in place. Salvors took the propeller, and the rudder now lies on the seabed. Hydroids, dead man's fingers and plumose anemones cover the hull, and shoals of saithe, pollock and cod gather around it. The site is tidal and is dived at slack water.
