Rockaway Beach

Also known as: Norrander's Reef · Norranders Reef

Rockaway Beach lies in a small protected cove on the east side of Bainbridge Island, and Seattle Dive Tours calls it its favourite site on the island. From a fixed buoy at the entry a line runs down the slope to Norrander's Reef, a rocky reef that holds most of the structure and life. Wolf eels, giant Pacific octopus, lingcod, kelp greenling, rockfish, sculpins and California sea cucumbers are reported. Finger reefs in shallow water make a good place for the safety stop. Entry is over large slippery rocks via a wooden staircase and is easiest at high tide; there are no toilets and only a few parking places.
