Sunken Island
Sunken Island is a seamount in open water, marked only by a mooring line, with a small summit at around 23 to 25 m and sides that fall into the deep. Divers descend hand over hand along the line through blue water until the top appears. The site is known for big lionfish, often many together, plus frogfish and Spanish dancers on the pinnacle. Schools of jacks, tuna, barracuda, batfish and mackerel gather around it, and sharks or the occasional manta ray pass by. Currents can be strong, with up- and down-currents, so dive centres go there rarely and only with experienced divers.
