Unicorn Wreck

Also known as: MV Unicorn · Unicorn · Dog Food Wreck · Hishidaiya Maru

The Unicorn is a steel cargo ship of about 55 to 60 m that sank around 1989 north of Mango Bay, off Koh Tao's north coast, and is also known as the 'Dog Food Wreck' after the animal feed found in its holds. Its specialty is depth and atmosphere: it is the island's deep wreck, with the bow at about 37 to 38 m and the seabed at about 50 m. The hull is still recognisable with bow, deck and superstructure, schools of fusiliers and snapper hang above it with barracuda and trevally in the blue, and groupers and moray eels use the darker recesses. Visibility on the wreck is often low, thermoclines are common and the interior is tight and silty. Several sources treat it as technical decompression diving and use it for tec training, so it is only suitable for divers with matching technical certification.
