King Kong Rock

King Kong Rock is a lesser-known site on Koh Tao's southern coast, just past Aow Leuk in the direction of Lang Khai Bay, named after 'Uncle Kong', who founded New Heaven Dive School, was the first Thai divemaster on the island and discovered the site. Its specialty is the boulder maze: massive granite boulders and submerged rocks form gullies, overhangs, crevices and swim-throughs that rise from about 18 to 22 m to within a few metres of the surface. Hard and soft corals, sea whips, sponges and anemones cover the rocks, where fusiliers, snapper and rabbitfish school and groupers, giant moray eels, lionfish, scorpionfish and stonefish hide, along with nudibranchs, cleaner shrimps and pipefish. Few boats visit, so it is usually quiet, and it is dived by boat in calm weather. Open Water divers can join in good conditions, but divers with good buoyancy get the most out of the passages.
