Junkyard Reef
Also known as: Junkyard
Junkyard Reef is an artificial reef on the sand about 400 m off Mae Haad beach on the west coast, started in 2006 by the local conservation group Eco Koh Tao. Its specialty is the quirky material: donated toilets, gym equipment, a car, tents and even a replica of the Sydney Harbour Bridge were placed here, later joined by steel frames with transplanted coral and giant clam releases. The structures now carry a busy fish community with schools of juvenile batfish, pufferfish and porcupinefish, saddleback clownfish, lionfish, yellow boxfish and a yellow-margin triggerfish, plus nudibranchs and shrimps for macro fans. At about 8 to 12 m with soft sand around the edges and usually calm water, it is used heavily for training, conservation courses and night dives.
