Sail Rock
Also known as: Hin Bai
Sail Rock is a solitary pinnacle that breaks the surface in open water between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, and its signature feature is the Chimney, a vertical tunnel through the rock that divers enter at about 18 m and leave near the top at roughly 5 to 8 m. Below the steep walls, which reach about 20 m, the bottom keeps falling away to around 40 m, and a few smaller pinnacles sit near the main rock. Because the rock stands alone, it attracts large schools of chevron and pickhandle barracuda, trevally, batfish and fusiliers as well as big groupers, while whale sharks pass by occasionally, mostly in season, and the walls and the Chimney hide morays, nudibranchs and small crustaceans. Currents can be strong on one side of the rock and absent on the other, and visibility changes with the season and around the pinnacle. A typical dive spirals upward around the rock; Open Water divers stay above 18 m, and the Chimney and deeper parts suit advanced divers with good buoyancy control.
