Haad Yao

Also known as: Haad Yao House Reef · Had Yao

Haad Yao is a beach on Koh Phangan's west coast where a sloping reef rich in hard corals, including table and brain corals, starts directly off the sand and runs west to a drop-off at about 10 to 16 m. Its draw is easy, relaxed diving in shallow water, which makes it a favourite for training dives, refreshers and long, unhurried dives. At night the site becomes special, as bioluminescent plankton lights up around the divers. Typical encounters include white-eyed morays, cuttlefish, squid, longnose butterflyfish, porcupine pufferfish, flatworms and anemonefish, and barrel sponges grow among the corals. Depending on the weather it is dived from the beach or from a boat, and it suits beginners while still offering enough life for experienced divers.
