PBY Catalina

Also known as: Catalina Floatplane Wreck · Catalina Wreck

The Catalina was lost in 1943 after hitting a boat, not far from the wartime seaplane base at Gavutu. The fuselage, wings and floats are still recognisable, while the engines have dropped off and lie on the seabed beside the airframe. Machine guns and munitions remain in place, and machine-gun bullets can still be seen along the rear fuselage. Soft corals cover the airframe, and lionfish, jacks, snapper and trevally live around it.
